“Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin condemns any people.” (Proverbs 14:28-35, NIV)
What truly makes a nation great? When we think about what makes a country great, we often think of wealth and power. We consider how much money the country has, how large its military is, or how advanced its technology is. It’s easy to assume that if a nation is rich and powerful, it will always be great and successful. However, this is not how God sees things, and He does not consider a nation great for those reasons. It says in today’s reading,
“A large population is a king’s glory, but without subjects a prince is ruined. Whoever is patient has great understanding, but one who is quick-tempered displays folly. A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones. Whoever oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God. When calamity comes, the wicked are brought down, but even in death the righteous seek refuge in God. Wisdom reposes in the heart of the discerning and even among fools she lets herself be known. Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin condemns any people. A king delights in a wise servant, but a shameful servant arouses his fury.”
According to today’s passage, real greatness is not about things we can see, buy, or wear. Instead, it is about good character before God. Doing what is right makes a country truly great, while doing wrong brings ruin. It is because the Bible says that God is the One who “changes the times and the epochs” and “removes kings and establishes kings” (Dan.2:21). This clearly does not imply that every citizen must be inherently righteous, just, and truthful. If it did, no nation could withstand God’s judgment. Instead, it signifies that the nation’s core or spirit must be upright, and that this integrity is achievable through the leadership of good and righteous leaders.
Verse 34 sums it up perfectly as it says, “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin condemns any people.” A nation that values truth, righteousness, and justice from God’s perspective is inherently strong and thriving. However, when it succumbs to sin and immoral acts, it invites condemnation and inevitable destruction. Sin acts like a silent disease, capable of secretly spreading and condemning entire populations. Even if a nation appears prosperous and self-important externally, internal decay—fueled by cruelty, greed, and dishonesty—will ultimately cause its collapse. Let us remember these words: “Sin condemns any people.” Romans 1:28-32 says that when people abandon God, He will give them over to their wicked desires (Rom.1:28-32). They will lose their moral compass, which points to the fear of God and the pursuit of His righteousness, and condemn themselves. What truly makes a nation great? What truly leads a nation down the path of ruin? The Bible says, “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin condemns any people.”
