“To you, O men, I call, and my voice is to the sons of men. O naive ones, discern prudence; and, O fools, discern wisdom.” (Proverbs 8:1-11, NASB)

God gives His wisdom to everyone and not just to the smart, wealthy, or educated. He gives it to everyone as a gift of His grace. Wisdom isn’t a status symbol for the few—it’s a gift for the many, rooted entirely in God’s generosity. We know this to be true because it sends an invitation to all who will heed its call. It says in today’s reading:

“Does not wisdom call, and understanding lift up her voice? On top of the heights beside the way, where the paths meet, she takes her stand; beside the gates, at the opening to the city, at the entrance of the doors, she cries out: To you, O men, I call, and my voice is to the sons of men. O naive ones, discern prudence; and, O fools, discern wisdom. Listen, for I shall speak noble things; and the opening of my lips will produce right things. For my mouth will utter truth; and wickedness is an abomination to my lips. All the utterances of my mouth are in righteousness; there is nothing crooked or perverted in them. They are all straightforward to him who understands, and right to those who find knowledge. Take my instruction, and not silver, and knowledge rather than choicest gold. For wisdom is better than jewels; and all desirable things can not compare with her.”

This passage presents wisdom not as a hidden secret for a select few but as a public herald. It says that she stands on the “heights,” beside the “way,” at the “gates,” and at the entrance of the “doors,” crying out and calling on people to come to her. This is an open invitation and not an exclusive one. To me, this passage illustrates a scenario in which a wealthy individual organizes a banquet and extends invitations to every member of the community, regardless of socioeconomic status, gender, age, health, or education. Attendance is contingent upon acceptance of the invitation and a hunger for quality food (Lk.14:16-24).

Nevertheless, this passage indirectly indicates that not all individuals will experience its benefits, as some may choose to decline, ignore, or be misled. Verse 4 says, “To you, O men, I call, and my voice is to the sons of men. O naive ones, discern prudence; and, O fools, discern wisdom.” Some people will choose to remain as they are, that is, they will prefer to be naïve, imprudent, and foolish. They fail to realize that this call invites people to live a life that mirrors God’s character and His way of life. While the world often views wisdom as common sense or street smarts used to get ahead, the Bible shows that it is more than that. It is a matter of life and death.  It will determine whether you will live a life that is pleasing to God or displeasing to Him. It will determine your future destiny, whether you are heaven-bound or hell-bound. Therefore, God’s invitation to a life of wisdom is not just good advice, but a holy calling.

To me, the most important benefit of God’s wisdom is our salvation through Christ Jesus. Apostle Paul said, “For consider your calling, brethren, that there were not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble; but God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong, and the base things of the world and the despised, God has chosen, the things that are not, that He might nullify the things that are, that no man should boast before God” (1 Cor.1:26-29). Yes, choosing God’s way of life is foolish to the world, but they are wise in His eyes. In addition to salvation, we will experience blessings in this life as well if we choose to walk in His wisdom. Jesus said, “I came that they might have life, and might have it abundantly” (Jn.10:10). Yes, God’s wisdom is beneficial for this life and the life after death! However, to those who reject His wisdom, God said, “The fool has said in his heart, ‘There is no God.’ They are corrupt, they have committed abominable deeds; There is no one who does good” (Ps.14:1). God has sent an invitation to a life of wisdom to everyone. Make sure you send him an RSVP today.

  • How does wisdom speak to people in public places and at entrances?
  • Do you believe that God’s wisdom can help you to live an abundant life on earth?
  • Why do some decline God’s invitation for a life of wisdom, and why do they think those who accept it are foolish?
