After I became a believer in college, I recall praying with my brother that we wanted to commit our lives to Christ and marry women who shared a similar passion. We heard a Christian song called “Household of Faith,” and both of us agreed that the lyrics perfectly captured what we wanted out of our marriage and family. The Bible says, “Unless the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it” (Ps.127:1). We wanted God to build our house that will be strong, fulfilling, and encouraging to others. We both decided to use it as a special song in our wedding ceremony, declaring our desire to commit to living a Christ-centered life and building a household of faith. Here is the lyrics to that song, and it still inspires me to follow through on that commitment.
“Here we are at the start committing to each other by His word and from our hearts. We will be a family in a house that will be a home and with faith we’ll build it strong.
(Chorus) We’ll build a household of faith that together we can make, and when the strong winds blow it won’t fall down. As one in Him we’ll grow and the whole world will know we are a household of faith.
Now to be a family we’ve got to love each other at any cost unselfishly. And our home must be a place that fully abounds with grace a reflection of His face.
Steve and Marijean Green’s life and marriage have been a testament to their Christian faith, impacting the world of contemporary Christian music. Steve, a renowned vocalist, and Marijean, a former member of the band Truth alongside Steve, married in 1976. Their partnership has demonstrated a faith-based relationship that extends beyond their personal lives into their ministry, expressed in their co-written song, “Household of Faith.” This powerful song summarizes their vision for a Christ-centered home, expressing their vision for building a family rooted in biblical principles and dedicated to serving God.
“Household of Faith” emerged from their desire to articulate their desire for a Christian home founded on the rock of Christ. The lyrics speak of building a house not merely with brick and mortar, but with acts of love, grace, and unwavering faith in Jesus Christ. Phrases like “We’ll build a household of faith, that together we can make, and when the strong winds blow, it won’t fall down” highlight the resilience and perseverance that come from a spiritual foundation, also acknowledging that life’s storms will inevitably come our way. The song emphasizes unity in Christ, the importance of mutual growth in Him, and the desire for their lives to be a witness to the world of God’s presence within their home.
For Christians today seeking a marriage that honors God and a family founded on faith, the message of “Household of Faith” offers deep and practical applications. Firstly, it highlights the importance of intentionality. Building a faith-filled household doesn’t happen by accident. It requires a conscious commitment from both the man and the woman to prioritize God and His Word. This can involve regular prayer together, studying Scripture as a couple, and discussing how to apply biblical principles to daily life and parenting. Secondly, the song emphasizes unity in Christ. A strong Christian marriage is one where both individuals are growing in their relationship with God and growing closer together toward Christ. It means we must seek God’s will for the family together, supporting and encouraging each other’s spiritual journeys, and, above all, forgiving one another as Christ has forgiven them. Finally, the “Household of Faith” calls for perseverance and endurance. Understanding that challenges will inevitably arise, a faith-founded household prepares to stand firm with God’s help. Furthermore, by living out our faith authentically within our homes and in the world, we can be a powerful testimony to God’s faithfulness, demonstrating the joy and stability that comes from building a life centered on Jesus Christ.
