Have you ever heard of the story of George Müller, who by faith ran an orphanage without ever asking people for donations? It was one of the most amazing and challenging story that I heard at the very beginning of my Christian life. He is one of my non-Bible heroes of faith. During one of the Bible studies, my discipler shared one of Müller’s story of faith and prayer. He told me the story of Müller instructing his staff to have the orphans sit at the breakfast table knowing that they had run out of food. Then he began leading a prayer of thanksgiving for the food that they were about to receive. Right after the prayer, a knock came at the door, and there was a baker who brought food for the orphanage. The baker shared that he was burdened all night and concluded that God was leading him to provide food for the children. As the orphans were eating, there came another knock on the door, and there was a milk delivery person. He said that his vehicle was broken down and decided to give the milk to the orphanage because he did not want them to be spoiled. When I first heard of Müller’s story, I felt it was too feel-good-of-a-story that I thought it must have been exaggerated. It wasn’t until I picked up some biographical books about George Müller that I was proven wrong. Here is what the Wikipedia (a secular source) said of him:

“Throughout all this, Müller never made requests for financial support, nor did he incur debt, despite the five homes costing more than £100,000 to build. Many times, he received unsolicited food donations only hours before they were needed to feed the children, further strengthening his faith in God. Müller was in constant prayer that God touched the hearts of donors to make provisions for the orphans.”

Two books that I still have in my library, George Müller: Man of Faith and Miracles by Basil Miller and Answers to Prayer by George Müller, was a great resource for me. May his life of faith inspire you and his prayers of faith challenge you to confidently draw near to His throne of grace where we can find grace and mercy in time of your need.

“Let us therefore draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and may find grace to help in time of need.” (Heb.4:16)

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, shall guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Phil.4:6-7)

Here is a really good biographical film about George Müller.
