In his letter to the Corinthians, Apostle Paul wrote, “Now I exhort you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all agree, and there be no division among you, but you be made complete in the same mind and in the same judgment” (1 Cor.1:10). These words of exhortation was relevant then, and it is so today for the church of Jesus Christ. The church has always struggled with the issue of division from the very beginning like the division between the Hellenistic Jews and Hebrew Jews concerning their widows. The church at Corinth was divided because people were saying, “I am of Paul,” “I am of Apollos,” “I am of Cephas,” and “I am of Christ.”
The modern term for division is “fault lines” coined by Pastor Voddie Baucham in his book, “Fault Lines: The Social Justice Movement and Evangelicalism’s Looming Catastrophe.” The classic fault lines of Christianity has been the likes of Predestination vs. Free Will of Man, Baptist vs. Presbyterian, Cessasionism vs. Continuationism. According to Baucham, the new ones tends to be based on Wokeness, Socialism, Capitalism, Globalism, Nationalism, and Systemic Racism. Baucham writes, “This is the main fault line at the root of the current debate–the epicenter of the Big One that, when it finally shifts with all its force, threatens to split evangelicalism right down the middle. Our problem is a lack of clarity and charity in our debate over the place, priority, practice, and definition of justice” (Baucham, Fault Lines)
I have struggled with these issues because I couldn’t fully understand what they were and where they came from like many pastors today. As a Bible teacher, I lacked clear understanding of their ideas, and it caused me to veer toward one of two directions. One way was to pretend to know what I am talking about, and the other was to acknowledge ignorance. I believe that God blessed Pastor Baucham with both biblical and experiential knowledge to address these issues and give us a proper biblical view on them. In this video, I found his teaching on one of the fault line called Critical Race Theory very helpful.
“He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” (Micah 6:8)
“God demands justice. But the question that we have to answer is: ‘What is justice?’ And I’m going to argue that justice is the righteous application of the Law of God… But is that what the term social justice means? The answer to that quite simply is no.” (Voddie Baucham)
“Here’s what I learned: It doesn’t matter how hard I try to qualify statements. It’s never going to be enough because their problem is not with my tone. It’s with the position that I take.” (Voddie Baucham)
“And that’s why it is so sinister because Critical Race Theory, Critical Social Justice, Antiracism wants to get away from the heart of man and deal with policies. You cannot legislate sin out of the heart of man.” (Voddie Baucham)
