“The LORD by wisdom founded the earth; by understanding He established the heavens. By His knowledge the deeps were broken up, and the skies drip with dew.” (Proverbs 3:19-26, NASB)
What if someone with photographic memory offered to give you his ability? Would you consider it? Imagine having a biochip implanted in your brain that lets you process information, solve problems, and think with the speed and power of a supercomputer. What if the procedure were painless and affordable? Would you receive it? It would be too great an offer to ignore. The book of Proverbs offers such an opportunity, but many people are ignoring it or passing it by. It says in today’s reading,
“The LORD by wisdom founded the earth; by understanding He established the heavens. By His knowledge the deeps were broken up, and the skies drip with dew. My son, let them not depart from your sight; keep sound wisdom and discretion, so they will be life to your soul, and adornment to your neck. Then you will walk in your way securely, and your foot will not stumble. When you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet. Do not be afraid of sudden fear, nor of the onslaught of the wicked when it comes; for the LORD will be your confidence, and will keep your foot from being caught.”
God is offering us His wisdom, the very wisdom that He used to create the heavens and the earth! To me, this is better than having a photographic memory or having a biochip implanted in my brain. It is because those things are temporary improvements, while God’s wisdom will give us superior blessings. Verses 19-20 say, “The LORD by wisdom founded the earth; by understanding He established the heavens. By His knowledge the deeps were broken up, and the skies drip with dew.” The rest of the passage goes on to encourage the readers to keep such wisdom and not depart from it. The benefits of keeping such sound wisdom are that it will give you life, security, peace, and protection from God’s judgment upon the wicked. Best of all, this offer is free for everyone. This offer can be accepted by simply asking for it and receiving it. James 1:5 explicitly says, “But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all men generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.”
Imagine being able to make the right decisions in the paths of your life. Isaiah 30:21 says, “And your ears will hear a word behind you, ‘This is the way, walk in it,’ whenever you turn to the right or to the left.” Picture making the right choices in life, some of which are between two goods and the lesser of two evils. 1 Thessalonians 5:21 says, “But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good; abstain from every form of evil.” Envision God granting fruitfulness to everything you do, as long as you follow His wisdom. Proverbs 16:3 says, “Commit your works to the LORD, and your plans will be established.” Visualize God working behind the scenes to bring about good according to His purpose in all areas of your life, whether good or bad. Romans 8:28 says, “And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.”
The reason why we can have such confidence is that “the LORD will be your confidence, and will keep your foot from being caught.” Isn’t this better than photographic memory or an advanced biochip? The wisdom that resides in our hearts and minds is more valuable than any jewel, bringing us true honor. The kind of wisdom we need in life is the same wisdom that God used to create the world. It is available to us when we draw near to God in Christ, and we can access it anytime, anywhere, and in any circumstances.
- How do you think “wisdom” played a part in God’s creation?
- How is God’s wisdom better than photographic memory, high IQ, or any other physical enhancements?
