Here is a timeless allegorical masterpiece by Robert Boyd Munger which is entitled “My Heart – Christ’s home.” This little pamphlet illustrates the Christian’s journey of surrendering every room of their heart to the Lordship of Jesus Christ. Munger portrays the human heart as a house, with Jesus as the honored guest. It follows a powerful narrative where the homeowner (you and me), eagerly welcomes Christ into their life, but soon realizes that true fellowship requires more than a simple invitation. It demands a full surrender to Christ. The core of Munger’s message is that salvation is a free gift, but discipleship is a life of continual surrender. We cannot expect Christ to be the Lord of our lives if we hold back certain “rooms” of our heart–our relationships, our finances, our career, our private thoughts, or our past hurts. He challenges us to examine our own “houses” and honestly ask ourselves if there are any locked doors or forgotten corners, and open them to Christ. He reassures us that Christ is not a forceful intruder but a loving friend who patiently waits for us to open every door to Him. He is the ultimate home decorator, ready to bring order, beauty, and peace to even the most cluttered and broken areas of our lives. He concludes that when we finally give Christ the keys to the entire house, our hearts become a sanctuary of worship, a source of light, and a true home for His presence.
Some of Munger’s descriptions of the rooms in our hearts:
- The study – It is the library of our heart or the study of the mind where we keep knowledge, wisdom, and understanding.
- The dining room – It is the room of appetites and desires where we work to try to satisfy all our wants.
- The living room – It is the comfortable room where e seek seclusion and quietness from loud and busy world outside. This is where we entertain family and friends for fellowship and companionship.
- The workroom – It is the “garage” of the home where we have workbench and some equipment to fix, build, and workout things.
- The rec room – It is the the room for fun and fellowship, and enjoy pleasure and laughter.
- The bedroom – It is the room where we experience close and intimate relationships and fulfilment of our sexual fantasies.
- The hall closet – It is the room where we put away things or hide things, and don’t want others to see them.
This book helped me with the process of inner healing where I learned to surrender to Christ different parts of my life. As I opened and evaluated the things in each room in prayer, I realized that I haven’t surrendered everything to Christ. The struggle for me was to surrender the liberal things in my life as well as things that gave me pleasure. One of the hardest room that I had to surrender was the bedroom where I couldn’t surrender what kind of a woman that I wanted to marry. One night the Lord gave me a dream where He led me to a video store and showed me all kinds of videos on the shelves. There were comedy section as well as drama, suspense, horror, and science fiction genre. At the end of the tour, the Lord led me upstairs to a secret room where there were pornographic videos were kept. It was at this time that the Lord revealed that the video store was my heart and I needed to get rid of all of the videos that offended Him. I woke up and spent the day confessing and asking God to remove the offensive things from my heart and mind. It was a good cleansing and renewing experience.
