Henrietta Mears was considered to be a spiritual mother to many Christian men considered spiritual giants. She was known as “The Teacher” by many of her students. She was respected Christian educator at the First Presbyterian Church of Hollywood, California, as well as gifted evangelist and author. (How times have changed in Hollywood, California!) She became the director of Christian education at the First Presbyterian Church at the behead of Pastor Stuart MacLennan. Although she suffered poor health and bad eyesight, she dedicated her life to raising young people to ministry through her Sunday School program. Well known Christian leaders such as Bill Bright (Campus Crusades for Christ), Billy Graham (Billy Graham Crusades), Jim Rayburn (Young Life), Dawson Trotman (Navigators) were either taught or mentored by her. She reminds me of Jochebed, mentor behind Moses (Heb.11:23), Deborah, the judge behind the judge Barak (Jud.4:4-9), and Ananias, the evangelist behind Paul the evangelist (Acts 9:10-19). She was the ordinary Christian behind the extraordinary Christians. She is also the founder of Gospel Light, a Christian publishing company and provider of many Christian education curriculum for churches. Further, her famous book, “What the Bible is All About,” is still in print and continues to be used in many Bible studies. You can read about her story in a book called, “Dream Big: The Henrietta Mear Story.”
