Here is Harold Morris telling his story of rebellious teen years that eventually led him to prison for life, and later put on death row. Through the sharing of the gospel by one of his old high school friend, he became a believer and dedicated his life to Christ. Thirteen years later, he was given a full pardon by the governor of Georgia and was released. Until his death in 2017, he dedicated his life to speaking to youth about the gospel of Christ and seeking to keep them from becoming who he was in prison. He is famous for telling his story of being “twice pardoned,” pardoned from his crime and pardoned for his sin and hell. You can read about it in his autobiography book “Twice Pardoned.”
“I stood in front of that judge and heard the saddest words in my whole life. He said, ‘Young man, for the crime of robbery, I sentence you to the state penitentiary and hard labor for the rest of your life.’ And he said, ‘For the crime of murder, I sentence you to the rest of your natural life to the state penitentiary and hard labor.’” (Harold Morris)
“I wrestled with that decision all night. February 19, 1974 at 3 o’clock in the morning, I got on my knees in that roach-infested prison cell, in that filthy dirty prison cell, and I invited Jesus Christ to come into my heart. I asked him to forgive me my sins. Two things happened: Number one I realized that I was a mighty sinner, and that Jesus Christ is a mighty Savior.” (Harold Morris)
“The governor of Georgia, and the pardons and parole board gave me a complete pardon. They did away with the crime that I’ve been charged with for 13 years, restored my rights as a citizen of the United States. I’m now free, and I can vote. I’m totally free.” (Harold Morris)
