Here is one of favorite disciple maker. His name was Dawson Trotman, the founder of the Navigators. His story became well known to me as I was saved and discipled by a Navigator Christian. Daws, as he became known as, served God during the golden era of American Christian ministry of Billy Graham, Jack Wyrtzen, Bill Bright, Ralph Winter, John MacArthur, Chuck Smith, John Wimber, Henrietta Mears, etc. He is well known for his approach to disciple-making, one-to-one discipleship, which became the trademark for Navigators. He explains the idea of it really well in his small booklet, “Born to Reproduce.” He tells the story of picking up a hitchhiker on his motorcycle one day. After sharing the gospel, the man received Christ as his Savior, but soon realized that he was the same man he witnessed to a year ago. He became shocked that the man did not have assurance of salvation, and started to visit those who he witnessed to in the past. He discovered that few went onto following Christ and the rest did not. As a result of this experienced, he decided to focus on follow-up and disciple-making rather than just sharing the gospel. In 1933, he died in Schroon Lake, New York trying to rescue a girl from drowning during water-skiing. He died the same way he tried to save one soul at a time with the gospel of Christ. Here is an actual recording of his message he gave concerning his discipleship approach entitled, “Born to Reproduce.”
